CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, also sometimes abbreviated Ceramic Reconstruction. The idea of the technology is to enable patients to make a single trip to the dentist for a filling, instead of having to book multiple return visits. This service uses computer-aided scanning and design technology to fabricate custom dental prosthetics quickly while you wait in the dentist’s chair.

In the past, if you wanted a filling, crown, or inlay, you had to go to the dentist twice. On the first trip, the dentist would assess your dental complaint, take an impression of your teeth, and then provide you with a temporary restoration, if applicable.

After that, you had to wait a couple of weeks for the laboratory to fabricate your new prosthetic and then return to the dentist to have it fitted. It was a lot of hassle.

CEREC, however, gets around this problem by enabling your dentist to create the prosthetics you need in real-time. The dentist feeds the appropriate input to the machine, and then it builds your filling, crown, or inlay, depending on the treatment you need. It’s a much simpler process.

This also benefits from another advantage. Unlike traditional interventions, it is made of a single block of solid ceramic, not a pressed metal. Thus, it may last longer than conventional techniques too.
